I'm genuinely so thrilled this came across my radar because Gothic's remake just went live on Steam today and I need to tell everyone about Alkimia Interactive and THQ Nordic bringing Piranha Bytes' legendary 2001 dungeon-crawler back from the dead โ there's already a demo available that you can dive into right now while the full game officially drops in mere hours! ๐ฎ
What makes this remake so exciting is how it layers on expanded questlines, deeper NPC routines with their own daily rhythms, brand new traversal abilities to navigate the environment, and "modernized" combat systems โ all wrapped around basically that same brilliant core experience we fell for years ago. You're still playing as one of those hapless convicts trapped beneath an enormous magical dome, chipping away at ore deposits you've got to sell off to a distant king who's apparently been locked in some kind of eternal war against orcs since the dawn of time (seriously how long has this conflict even been going on?). The intro cinematic is worth checking out separately โ there's this magnificent shot of King Arahim just sitting up, staring down at an orc head clutched in his fist with that exact expression you get when he can't quite recall who it belonged to or why it ended up in his hand. It captures the whole spirit of Gothic so perfectly and sets up all that wonderful tension between survival, mining, faction intrigue, and whether those endless orcs are really as bad for your health as people claim!
