You guys won't believe where Google image search actually comes from because it has everything to do with JLo's green dress at the Grammys in 2000! Apparently the engineers realized people searching for that dress wanted to see it not read about it and built image search specifically around that insight, launching the first version in July 2001. It's wild to think how much we take for granted now since anyone can type anything and get pictures instantly while back then you couldn't really browse images at all on the web! Now they're celebrating twenty-five years by replacing the current minimalist search bar with a gallery that automatically updates based on your own browsing history and interests across Google. So instead of starting from blank it will show you things you actually care about before you even type anything because it's tracking what you look up and interact with online all the time!
They're also bringing back Collections which was always buried but is now pinned right at the top for easy access when you want to save specific sets of images. And here's my favorite part — if the web doesn't have enough existing pictures they just let your search generate a new one on the fly using their Nano Banana model through Gemini. You can literally ask in your normal query and an AI image gets inserted directly into the AI Overview box which conveniently pushes all organic results further down the page! Both updates are rolling out over the next few weeks but only for English-language accounts at first so keep that in mind if you're waiting to try it. It feels like a massive step toward Google turning search from information retrieval into an personalized creation engine rather than just showing you what already exists online and I love that angle!
