You guys, check out OpenPuck because it solves one of my favorite legacy hardware headaches! The Steam Controller was amazing but basically orphaned โ Valve stopped making them years ago while still supporting the Discord mobile app which you can actually use to wirelessly connect a Steam Controller to almost anything today. The catch is that layout mapping isn't always clean on those devices, which is exactly what this project fixes. OpenPuck flashes custom firmware so your controller broadcasts as an XInput device over Bluetooth, meaning it genuinely works everywhere โ Switch and PlayStation consoles alike, plus older TVs with basic controllers. That kind of universal compatibility for a technically 'dead' product is wild because the original hardware design was always solid; it just needed the right interface exposed to the modern ecosystem.
The project itself has everything you need: OpenPuck on GitHub includes full build instructions and a complete parts list so anyone can replicate this at home. The most clever part is that they also designed a 3D-printable charging puck adapter, which lets your original wireless charger still sit where it belongs instead of cluttering up your desk with an ugly dongle. There's even a USB Y cable for wired play โ you plug both the controller and a power source into one port. But here is the critical thing I want to make sure everyone catches: if you use this firmware hack, your wireless controller CANNOT wirelessly charge off its original base while playing. You have to keep it plugged in via USB during use unless you build the adapter on top of that. Still an awesome project and a great example of what open-source can do for legacy hardware!
