You guys have got to see this because it is genuinely wild β€” two Trump DOJ lawyers just issued subpoenas to six New York Times reporters over their Air Force One reporting, and I cannot even begin to describe how crazy that is for a democracy. They're asking about NYT articles covering the president's 2017 Paris trip, his son Don Jr.'s plea deal in Manhattan which was still under investigation at the time (let that sink in), and Robert Mueller's probe into Russian ties. The White House claims it's a "routine inquiry" but every journalist I know knows this is not routine β€” it's a direct hit on journalism, especially after they already fined Fox $1.3 billion over those campaign claim statements. NYT itself says the move chills news reporting and sets a dangerous precedent for any publication that covers anything remotely sensitive about the administration. Seriously though think about what this means: reporters getting subpoenaed for simply writing the news is exactly the kind of escalatory behavior we should be talking about more often.
