You guys need to read this because it’s a massive blow for internet pricing transparency! At the upcoming July 22 FCC meeting, they will vote on dropping the rule that forces ISPs to itemize every pass-through fee — government fees, pole attachment costs, right-of-way charges — so instead of seeing what each fee is, we'll get one vague "up to" total. The new order also lets providers replace prominent price labels with a hyperlink and stop making pricing data available as machine-readable spreadsheets, which destroys the ability for anyone to build comparison tools or do market research. ISPs can even give verbal summaries instead of reading full disclosures over the phone during sales calls, and there's no longer any requirement to keep archived fee info after a plan is discontinued — so the history of how pricing changes just gets erased.

I am not okay with this because it buries junk fees under layers of complexity that make bills impossible for regular people to decipher — Public Knowledge and dozens other groups already filed against it, comparing it to hospitals sending bills without itemizing charges or medication at all! The loss of readable data is particularly damaging because we need aggregation to fight price discrimination across neighborhoods. Keep this on your radar through late July; if the vote passes on the 22nd, these changes take effect by early August and will make shopping for internet service a much darker experience for everyone.
