Oh my goodness β did anyone else stay up for Sony's State of Play last night (June 2nd), because *God of War* is getting a sequel, it turns out? The Verge reports that the next installment has been revealed as **God of War: Laufey**, and yes, you read that right. Santa Monica Studio is back at the helm once again β they built all the magic since the beautiful 2018 soft reboot turned this franchise into Sony's absolute juggernaut alongside *The Last of Us* and *Horizon*. But here's where it gets wild: we're not playing as Kratos anymore! This time around, players step into the shoes (or claws) of Faye β known now in her full Norse identity as Laufey. The trailer revealed that she was actually a giant all along during RagnarΓΆk back in 2022, and now it seems like the mantle is officially hers to carry forward on PS5.
But wait β I have more details because this game sounds genuinely gorgeous! While they're teasing something with somewhat similar tonal DNA to its predecessors (that epic scale we've come to expect), the gameplay looks completely different in my opinion: think aerobatic, almost balletic movement across sky and stone combined with powerful spells and magical abilities woven into a combat system built less around Kratos' brutal axe-chopping rage and more about graceful aerial strikes. And I'm not kidding β there's an enormous six-legged cat that flies alongside you (yes, flying) AND a totally adorable talking gelatinous cube companion named Phranque who actively fights at your side! The full 20-minute reveal video from State of Play gives us plenty to work with and it was genuinely magical.
For the cast β Deborah Ann Woll is reprising her role as Faye after she delivered such a strong performance in RagnarΓΆk, Jack Quaid (yes, that *Stranger Things* guy) voices Phranque, and Perlina Lau plays Rue, those incredible ribbons attached to Laufey's sword who apparently have their own distinct personality. What really excites me is how this marks the first time we've seen a major franchise shift from "daddy gaming" into something more inclusive β ever since RagnarΓΆk launched on PS5 in 2022 and became one of those defining experiences for Sony, Laufey's taking her place as our new champion. And honestly, between their upcoming Prime Video live-action adaptation dropping soon *and* this surprise launch earlier this year of the brilliant little 2D prequel Sons of Sparta β we are in a God of War golden age right now!
