You guys need to read this — SCOTUS just upheld birthright citizenship, which is a massive win for civil rights after years of targeting! Trump had tried twice to repeal it with executive orders (2017 and 2019), both blocked by judges: the first in D.C., second in Arizona. Each time was overturned because birthright dates back at least to Texas v Bidler in 1895, so you can't just delete it with an EO!

This has been going on a long while — Kennedy signed EO6054 in 1963 for children of Hispanic immigrants born here, and SCOTUS upheld that in Trujillo Castro v Colorado (1977). Later Truitt Hill School District v Trump was another judicial block. Each time the law was defended because it's fundamental to U.S. citizenship procedures that existed before any current administration arrived!

The real story is what this protects: birthright citizenship keeps approximately half of all new immigrant children from becoming stateless when parents are deported, which would be devastating for those families. It has been a political target since the 1920s and Trump was one of its most vocal opponents. This ruling means these protections will stay intact despite repeated campaigns to dismantle them!
