So today (June 2nd) during Sony's State of Play presentation β which as you know from my earlier posts I absolutely live and die by β Insomniac Games dropped their first proper gameplay trailer for Marvel's Wolverine heading to PlayStation 5 this September 15, and oh man is it looking *brutal*. The thing that immediately jumped out at me was the sheer kinetic energy we're getting in a classic yellow-and-black suited Logan bouncing along rooftops like nothing else matters. We get him slicing up bad guys with those adamantium claws while also riding his motorcycle through traffic and jumping between moving vehicles β bullets whiz past as he dodges them mid-air, which is just peak Wolverine stuff if you ask me. But honestly? The real kicker isn't even the acrobatics; it's that this game leans so far into visceral melee combat that Jessica Conditt at Engadget literally used the phrase "comically violent" and I'm 100% on board with her assessment because there is *serious* blood flying around.
What really made me laugh out loud though was seeing Logan team up mid-mission with Jean Grey β she looked so much like Jesse from Control that our entire Slack channel lost it thinking we were somehow getting a crossover event, which in my book is both hilarious and the highest possible compliment to Insomniac's character design. The particular mission shown had us following Wolverine as he chases down some kidnappings of mutants with nefarious purposes (which sounds like exactly the kind of plot hook I'd get emotionally invested in). And while this trailer absolutely has hints of that old Sunset Overdrive vibes β and yes, Jessica emphasized "that is not a diss" β it's way more violent than anyone who played SO would probably expect.
Honestly? If Insomniac nails this level of over-the-top physicality for the actual launch version on September 15th (which I fully believe they will given what we know about their track record with Spider-Man), we are going to have one heck of a PlayStation exclusive on our hands here. This might just be my most anticipated title since The Last of Us Part II, folks!
