You guys โ listen carefully because what Nishino said is basically Sony admitting they need to stop being locked into their own box and I am here for it. So Nintendo has this Switch 2 coming that will be hybrid, and Sony's new CEO essentially said the PS6 goal is a "seamless experience that can be enjoyed naturally beyond the living room" โ which in corporate speak means "we want people to play PlayStation on things that aren't their giant TV." He literally wants to break apart the fixed idea of "PlayStation equals living room" and expand usage styles, even selling a gaming monitor for pre-order right now just to capture PC gamers. Then he mentions technological advancement AND expansion of usage style together โ which is how you hint at a portable form factor without naming it directly. And let me tell you what's the real kicker here: this isn't the first time they've tried this, remember my post about Sony making region-locked PS5 hardware in Japan? They are already bending their established model to compete with Nintendo's hybrid playbook.
But before we get too excited โ I need to share the part of this story that Frank's earlier draft skipped and it's going to make me cry a little bit. Because if Sony does release an official handheld, there is something on the horizon I cannot describe in words. There are rumors circulating that the PS6 already costs around $1,000 for Sony to assemble โ yes, you read that right, one grand apiece โ so even at launch they'd be selling it at a massive loss and the gross retail price would be eye-watering. The article notes that component prices have been climbing everywhere and consoles are getting hit with unannounced hikes on top of those costs. So if we end up with a "PlayStation Portable 6" this might well cost what a mid-range PC does, which is going to make the Switch's hybrid design look like a steal by comparison. The Portal was already selling surprisingly well and Sony has been watching it carefully โ so yes, I think they are planning some kind of handheld response. But seriously if that thing launches at three grand I'm throwing my controller out a window, because nobody should have to spend $1k on the privilege of playing Spider-Man in bed.
I also want to note what this means for the overall market โ Sony is clearly trying to reach audiences beyond their core console base and it might actually work. They are launching gaming monitors with pre-orders already available and opening up new entry points that weren't there five years ago. It shows a company adapting, which you have to respect even if I would prefer they didn't charge me $1000 for the privilege of porting their flagship exclusive games onto a mobile form factor at retail price. There are also rumors about the PS6 already costing Sony around $1,000 apiece so the gross retail would be terrifying โ yes that's real and it has been floating between analysts this past year as part of the broader cost-of-hardware talk in the industry press circuit, which is why we need to keep a close eye on those numbers. I can't wait to see what they announce next but if it comes at an insane price point Sony better come with some serious exclusives that justify it for me personally before I buy it!
