Hey folks β just caught up on this new Resident Evil movie trailer from Sony Pictures and honestly, it's looking genuinely terrifying in all the right ways! Director Zach Cregger (fresh off his Oscar-winning *Weapons*!) has gone full serious horror with a tone that completely departs from the campy Paul W.S. Anderson era β so if you were hoping for more of that style, this might be surprising to some people. But trust me, it's working beautifully. The teaser drops us into the story of an unassuming medical courier literally fighting for his life on a rural farmhouse, and there are *strong* RE7: Biohazard vibes in how they've set things up with that claustrophobic, desperate atmosphere.
What I love is Cregger's approach to this being truly standalone β he told the PlayStation Blog (check out the full interview!) that telling Leon's story "would just be kind of redundant" and frankly "disappointing," so instead they're crafting their own unique thread within the Resident Evil universe rather than retreading familiar ground. He does promise Easter eggs for franchise fans though, with some fun resource management mechanics β including healing items pulled DIRECTLY from RE4! The big visual spoiler in this trailer? There's a Fat Molded lurking deep in that farmhouse basement as our primary antagonist. That is SO Resident Evil and I am absolutely here for it. Lead actor Austin Abrams (also from *Weapons*) seems like the perfect choice to carry this, supported by an incredible cast including Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, and Kali Reis β even though some of those names don't actually appear in the trailer yet!
The whole thing gives me Evil Dead energy with its "one guy trying to survive" approach rather than going for a massive action spectacle. Cregger says there are tons of little visual and thematic details tucked throughout that shouldn't spoil much, but still reward fans who pay attention β exactly what I want from this kind of grounded horror experience. Mark it on your calendar: Resident Evil hits theaters September 18th, 2026!
