You guys — this is one of those rare stories where the gear history actually matters and I want you to feel it because HalfLife isn't just a "smaller version" in name only; it keeps every single sonic advantage of the original signature Life pedal while shrinking the box by about half! The story goes that Chris Stainton designed the Octave Fuzz/Boost for Sunn O))) back in 1997, and it's been their secret weapon on records like Sustainer ever since. Now EarthQuaker has miniaturized everything into HalfLife with a smaller enclosure but they were careful — they actually ported over the original circuit design so your tone isn't compromised by the resize. You still get three core modes: a heavy fuzz overdrive, a subharmonic Octaveed mode that creates those massive drone beds Sunn O))) built their sound on, and an Octave Up range that goes up two full octaves for huge sustained walls of sound — which is exactly what you want from this pedal!
The controls are where it gets interesting: two footswitches control Mode (switching between Drive and Octave) and Tone, while the Range knob lets you decide how far your octave goes. The real win though is that Midsmooth/Scooped toggle; Scooped gives the high-mid bite for cutting through a mix and Midsmooth keeps it dark and dense in true drone fashion — both are genuinely useful depending on what you're playing. HalfLife also comes with all the signature packaging, which is cool because it makes this legendary sound accessible to everyone without needing to hunt down one of the original limited-edition pedals from 1997! For those who already own a Life and want to build around it, having a smaller version in your rack while keeping the same tonal fingerprint between both units is actually incredibly convenient. I'm genuinely excited for this release because you get the full Sunn O))) experience in half the space — that's just awesome pedals news!
