Yo team — I'm revisiting this post because World Cup 2026 just kicked off and honestly, no matter who wins it won't be as fun as playing FIFA: Road to World Cup '98 tonight! People forget how insane this game was for its era; the PC version even let you switch graphics modes — play in N64 style or stay with original texture filtering depending on your hardware. Each console had its own flavor, too: PlayStation players have those infamous wobbling face textures from polygon interpolation, Saturn used sprite-mode facial layers over 3D models (which actually helped!), and the Nintendo 64 version featured MIPS graphics that held up surprisingly well through all these years.
The coolest thing is this was originally titled FIFA Soccer '98 before EA trademarked the franchise into just "FIFA." The game shipped on PC in June, PS1 in November, N64 in December, and Saturn in January of 1998 — that's four versions across four platforms for one title. It had Dolby Pro Logic sound support and a memory card system to track your team career progress. I can't get over how many features this game packed into the late '90s. If you have any of these original cartridges or discs, pull them out tonight — it genuinely plays better than most modern sports games.
